<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">But, that's alright
because the piece is mine, and after all, I planned it that way. But,
seriously, on this piece there are so many different motifs and
styles of quilting designs:</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Straight line quilting,
stitch-in-the-ditch, curved crosshatching, feathers, ferns, stars,

quilting, long loops, and even a Zentangle<span style="font-family: Times New Roman, serif;">©</span>
design called Rick's Paradox. Frankly, it took longer to find the
designs, and figure out where to put them than it did to actually
quilt them.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">I usually hold myself back
to three motifs (with slight variations to fit into the spaces) on
any one piece. Continuity is key here to keeping down the chaos.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">But, on this I wanted to
go all the way. Kind of like the pieces I see shared in other blogs
and in the big quilt shows. Over the top, quilted to death pieces...I
am sure you've seen them.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Put a fork in it - it's done!
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">But, is this even a good
idea? To go all the way, quilt to the “endth” degree, get as
complex as you possibly can? Just to show you can? Certainly, that is
what quilt show judges are looking for...Just how talented are you?
How much time do you have to devote to the quilting of a piece?</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Of course, when you are
quilting for customers, their vision for their piece and your vision
can be wildly different. And, their budget will certainly come into
play. Karen McTavish once told a class I was attending: “You will
never make a living quilting whole cloth quilts for customers because
no one will ever pay you what that level of work is worth.” Same
holds true for the 'quilted to death' project.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">My quilt “Tangled Up in
Blue” was in the American Quilters Society show in Phoenix this
month. My category was won by a quilt with 27,000 Swarovsky crystals
on it. First of all, that's a LOT of money in crystals. But, I
wonder...was it really necessary?</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Even cool on the back. Two layers of wool batt...has a mind of it's own before blocking!
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Yes, I make pieces for
competition in quilt shows. And, yes, I have had customers tell me
they want a blue ribbon in the next show, so “do what you need to
do to make that happen.” But, how much farther will quilting have
to go to win in the next big shows? What's the future hold?</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">I'd like to show you how
to give a little dimension to appliques using cutouts of wool
batting. The first picture shows the paper patterns that I traced
from the quilt top. I pinned them to two layers of wool batt and cut
them out.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I use quilt basting spray
to lightly spray the bears. Reaching just under the quilt top, I pat
them in place between the top and the regular batting layer. Then
smooth the top back in place.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">The next picture shows
that I have outlined the Momma Bear, and not yet the Baby Bear.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">And, now with the
background filled in with a loose meander, the bears have a nice
puff. Papa Bear resides at the bottom edge of the quilt.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">I used this same technique
to stuff birds, fish and flowers. Best to do this with simple shapes
without a lot of detail. Cute, huh?</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">I've been away from this
blog for waaaaay tooooo long! But, let's see what I've been up to.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">This is a <u>Made
in America</u> embroidery designed by Claudia Dinnell. My
customer spent a whole lot of time creating it. I think she used the
term “nightmare.”</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I've never been handed a
piece like this and I was lost at how to start. It's <u>all</u>
embroidery. So, after searching around, I found a couple of pictures
of other copies of this design that gave me an idea of how to quilt
it. It started with stitching on top of the major design lines with
invisible thread. Here's a picture of Lady Liberty, before and after
outlining.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Oh, and I have wanted to
try quilting with two layers of batting and thought this piece would
really benefit because of the open areas that would not get quilted.
This is two layers of wool batt. </span>

out to longarm quilter, Susan Lawson, whose idea I borrowed. I have
collected a few photos of applique quilts that do not have sashing,
as I find it difficult to plan quilting for this situation. Creating
diamonds in the intersections of the blocks and adding feather
borders was a perfect solution. Thanks, fellow longarmer!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">I'm glad someone is
willing to take on one of these fantastic Judy Niemeyer patterns. I'm

just to quilt them! I found several on google, although not too many
pics that show the quilting. So, here are mine.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">It's been a long time
coming. If you have followed this blog for any time, you have seen my
Blue quilt in various stages of completion. Two and half years to
design, piece and quilt this from my collection of blue and white
fabrics. (When you quilt for customers for a living, there is
precious time to work on your own things. So, I grabbed time where I
could.)</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">After discovering the
Zentangle art form several years ago, I knew I wanted to use some of
the designs as inspiration for quilting. And, that is what I have
tried to do with my quilt. The next picture is of a tangle named
Leaflet. It translated beautifully to continuous line quilting and
looks, I think, quite smashing in the bright blue thread. (I used
four colors of blue Glide thread over this quilt, in addition to
Aurifil clear nylon for the stitch in the ditch.)</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">The odd shaped dark blue
batik corner was a definite challenge. I sketched, stitched and
ripped out designs for 2 whole days until I settled on this swash,
inspired by the tangles Finery and FeatherFall. The actual
FeatherFall also appears in the aqua triangle. </span>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">People have complimented
me on my photos for this blog. The quality of inexpensive cameras
today really helps. But, the best aspect of my photography is
lighting. And, I take no credit for that. You see, my studio has a
big picture window just to the left of my longarm frame. It's a
northern exposure, so no sun comes in that window, but tons of light,
which creates the shadows that highlight the quilt line.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">The reason I mention this,
is that sometimes, great texture shows in the studio, and therefore
in the quilt photos, only to have that texture disappear when the
quilt is hung in a show or on the wall of your house. This has been a
great frustration to me. And, one that I try to keep in mind when I
plan quilting. Am I spending too much time creating complex quilt
motifs that will never been seen? I'm afraid I have in the past.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Hopefully, that will not
be the case of the Christmas in Baltimore quilt...but it is still a
possibility. With that in mind, here are Blocks 9 through 12.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">So, here we are again with Row 2.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9F5bOQ6fm7mUy0rgly3u9562zcTzJ7ZLOBQdikb2xOdR1HrzyoaMFaAYkJs62QCy7zlZPBer499-kzRCy44rLfm6PI3_s7kP4CXX-nJO33LwrmPmvc-vA8CFUWFbiBj5V_TBeKI227OAg/s1600/Row+2+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9F5bOQ6fm7mUy0rgly3u9562zcTzJ7ZLOBQdikb2xOdR1HrzyoaMFaAYkJs62QCy7zlZPBer499-kzRCy44rLfm6PI3_s7kP4CXX-nJO33LwrmPmvc-vA8CFUWFbiBj5V_TBeKI227OAg/s320/Row+2+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Block 5 has lots of space,
so I filled it up with paisleys. Sweet.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Block 6 also has space, so
we have pebbles with occasional shells.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Block 7 – Oooh, I'm so
happy with how this turned out. After outlining the interior petals
and leaf spaces, I was at a loss as how to quilt the background
because there are still a lot of teeny spaces formed by the leaves
along the edge of the design. It just popped into my head to echo
those shapes a couple of times. Then what? Keep going! The echos fill
the space out to the boundary. So cool.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitfrDWUzAW_tjIOxpAfhJ8fwTXh-ObiJtjVcN4FtRVEVi-_WxW8FJJC_VwZMx6ff18pTZ894Utlo_IXT8k6Bxuy3M7yYgfVnAhLHKagHgcgaSvVOjXXjO2o86be8K7CaOZcLR4UILbzUQD/s1600/Row+2+004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitfrDWUzAW_tjIOxpAfhJ8fwTXh-ObiJtjVcN4FtRVEVi-_WxW8FJJC_VwZMx6ff18pTZ894Utlo_IXT8k6Bxuy3M7yYgfVnAhLHKagHgcgaSvVOjXXjO2o86be8K7CaOZcLR4UILbzUQD/s320/Row+2+004.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Block 8 is a little more
open than the reindeer was, so I have added little feathers to the
continuous curl design.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I've got some non-quilty
commitments during the rest of this week, so progress on Row 3 will
be slower. See you when I get it finished!</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I've had several people
ask if I can post the Christmas in Baltimore quilt, as it is being
quilted. So, this is Block Row One of four rows. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPzcVurzVTWD8yN2ZqI1ifwcRNFbZ88Cno7KZcXXxif9VPBIzCSqcQQS14APk18LflawqPs6HIJzD10-0K_hfY8rRm-ARB8KBx4ZUKp_PwSGyURsf3DDOAh6Kpjy6EeXt9dC3OdX1mIQmn/s1600/Block+Row+one+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPzcVurzVTWD8yN2ZqI1ifwcRNFbZ88Cno7KZcXXxif9VPBIzCSqcQQS14APk18LflawqPs6HIJzD10-0K_hfY8rRm-ARB8KBx4ZUKp_PwSGyURsf3DDOAh6Kpjy6EeXt9dC3OdX1mIQmn/s320/Block+Row+one+001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">The hardest part of
this row was quilting into the spaces of the reindeers' antlers.
Those little spaces are only ¼ inch wide.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I have decided to try
various micro fill designs, especially because some of the spaces are
so small. So, I have here stipple, curls, swirls, and a little

<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">But first, let me explain,
I have a Love/Hate relationship with monofilament (or, invisible)
thread. When it works for me, it works beautifully. But, there have
been times, when switching to it from my regular trilobal poly thread
(love me some Glide thread!), I have been totally unable to balance
the tension. To the point where, on several occasions, I have cursed
out loud that “I will never use the darn stuff again!”</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">So, I told this quilt maker
that I would use Glide, and match all the threads colors to the
fabrics. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">But...(I whined) invisible
thread is really the best option for any piece that needs lots of
stitch in the ditch and applique outlining. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Okay, so I put on my Big
Girl Panties, loaded a practice fabric sandwich and started fiddling
with the tension knob. Invisible threads (whether nylon or poly) have
a certain amount of stretch, and are quite a bit finer than regular
thread, and they like to run with the top tension a bit looser. Fine
tuning your tension when switching thread types just needs to be
done.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">OMG, I got the tension
absolutely perfect on the very first try! I know there is nothing
wrong with the thread or my machine. Tension is absolutely the
longarm quilters responsibility. But, I still don't know why it is
working now as opposed to before.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">So, you have a big area
that you wish to fill with pebbles, but, (sigh) they take such a long
time to do! A way to lighten the load, as it were, would be to
incorporate something larger into the pebbling. So, I call this
Islands in the Pebbles! </span>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">When I first started
quilting I thought feathers had to be strictly designed. A spine that
is drawn out using tools like cardboard cut in perfect undulating
curves, plumes that were laid out in the right angle, and all the
correct size...these were the perfection to attain. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">All you have to do in take
a design class with Sharon Schamber or read books by Judy Allen (“The
Art of Feather Quilting”) or Lee Cleland (“Feathers that Fly”)
to see that there are RULES to designing the perfect feather! </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHVAmOnBS__lsemk1RauPlapvrJbjb54qRlEhPQBNJLXpylXYUHhyphenhyphenFSGQqP_286dxKsB7hh-nUe-jXYj7RymmFiK9-NZ4RRc0f7zYZP8fZhMNMILhOk7U_oDrl5CRm8gxZ-UR5dlLPceQ7/s1600/feather+attitude+005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHVAmOnBS__lsemk1RauPlapvrJbjb54qRlEhPQBNJLXpylXYUHhyphenhyphenFSGQqP_286dxKsB7hh-nUe-jXYj7RymmFiK9-NZ4RRc0f7zYZP8fZhMNMILhOk7U_oDrl5CRm8gxZ-UR5dlLPceQ7/s320/feather+attitude+005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"> (feathers from Judy Allen's book, pink thread on pink satin)</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">And, of
course, this leads to stunning quilted feathers. But, there are other
feathers, too!</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Certainly there are
sophisticated quilts that demand this sort of perfection. Ah, but
there are others where you can be much freer in execution. Look at
this Christmas Dresden Fan, for example. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">First of all, the feathers
have no spine! And, there are curls thrown in. The original feather I
copied started with the curl, feathered over it with three plumes,
then switched to add three or four plumes off in the other direction.
But of course, all such designs must fit into the space allowed. And
this space has chunks taken out by the tips of the fan blades. So, I
convinced myself to just go with the flow. </span>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Wow, did I fill pages of
doodles before coming up with a plan for this piece! I even started
quilting one plan, only to rip out the stitches when I realized
“Well, that doesn't look good!”</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuoV2Rv7DSeUFr6-9GSHnpxVu8X4LpxbD4DIBJ0ToYZpU7DPGMsS8TcD7J8eqkhh3xe4XgsxzTDSVMPNSxyKksl7gRUCHYQwZxRQZBOswOt_jMsrBUC2CyPNS6GSLtrycuRqkuTQvQRtWx/s1600/Stripey+Sun+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuoV2Rv7DSeUFr6-9GSHnpxVu8X4LpxbD4DIBJ0ToYZpU7DPGMsS8TcD7J8eqkhh3xe4XgsxzTDSVMPNSxyKksl7gRUCHYQwZxRQZBOswOt_jMsrBUC2CyPNS6GSLtrycuRqkuTQvQRtWx/s320/Stripey+Sun+003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">This plan came about when
I realized I could not stitch in the ditch around the aqua squares,
because some seams were pressed to the aqua, some to the white. It
just wouldn't look right. So, I thought I would quilt a star into
each aqua square, and then carry them into the white space, kind of
like ghost stars. It definitely helped that the piecing increments
were easy...2 inch, then 3 inch and 4 inch star spaces. This meant I
could stitch the echo lines using a ruler and minimal pre-marking.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">

<span style="font-size: medium;">I explained to the
customer that I would not quilt on the circles and petal shapes until
the background fill was finished. We used two layers of batting –
wool over a cotton/poly blend – and I hoped that would be enough.
In the end, we decided to quilt a petal shape into the large center
circle, as it was 4 ½ inches across. The smaller shapes had enough
fill from the wool batting to hold up on their own.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">This piece is an excellent
example of how to use the color gradations in a piece of fabric to
put depth in a flower. My customer has fussy cut these fabrics so
that petals appear to lie under other petals, just as they would in
nature. This is wonderful attention to detail.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">This is one of the hardest
things I've done with a longarm....pebbling. </span>
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Well, actually, all
backtracking is hard, especially without a stitch regulator. You see,
a pebble is made up of a circle-and-a-half. You must stitch a circle,
then stitch along part of that stitched circle to make it to the
place you begin the next pebble. With a stitch regulator, you can
slow down when backtracking the original line. Without one, you are
doomed to stitch it all at the same speed.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">A pebble is a circle,
small or large, round or oblong. In this photo, the quilter has laid
a penny on the surface to show you how small the circles are...6 to 8
circles in the space of a penny! Well, it does create awesome
texture, but, really, is that necessary?!! (Quilted on a Domestic
Sewing Machine by Julie Baird.)</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi31yREIq55wV1gbbr2tSmFV5bnsrrKU6xCq8miuJcgh2k0X_sfidd2ciUpmxJpgBCc0Cd5HGu0rFi-urR6WRcyxQJK5XRfLU5bf8fgS61YcsFae99C_fwP4sLuaKWicAiBjI09wR_O_kP5/s1600/tiny+pebbles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi31yREIq55wV1gbbr2tSmFV5bnsrrKU6xCq8miuJcgh2k0X_sfidd2ciUpmxJpgBCc0Cd5HGu0rFi-urR6WRcyxQJK5XRfLU5bf8fgS61YcsFae99C_fwP4sLuaKWicAiBjI09wR_O_kP5/s1600/tiny+pebbles.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">You should never see a
line traveling between the pebbles. The connections between them
should be invisible, right at that point where each pebble touches
another. Clear as mud, right?</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">This Labyrinth Walk quilt
just screams for pebbling, mainly because of the maker's use of the
Stonehenge fabric line. However, at a recent quilt show I saw this
very quilt pattern, and it was quilted with what I would call River
Rock-sized pebbles. And, if you study rocks, you will see that most
of them are not exactly circles. Ovals, oblongs, kidney shapes, and
something like a round-cornered triangle. I knew this is what I
wanted to try on this quilt. And, I love it!</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3QFPH9LbdtfjNh_gaKZuJ0NwTjkkayuzLgKEjznl1Rg8ZXjMsl3NYPZvWJ7WsnJe984mcL035TYJIjjmNByqkDaP3oSh_uJ8_XzAth1D1mvs9B0JXzZ3lDu1ciG9xE4NXiKmlbrQ0Yw2H/s1600/Pebbles+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3QFPH9LbdtfjNh_gaKZuJ0NwTjkkayuzLgKEjznl1Rg8ZXjMsl3NYPZvWJ7WsnJe984mcL035TYJIjjmNByqkDaP3oSh_uJ8_XzAth1D1mvs9B0JXzZ3lDu1ciG9xE4NXiKmlbrQ0Yw2H/s1600/Pebbles+001.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Now, most of the time,
that backtracked line hits right on top of the original line, and all
is well. But, it does not take but a hairs-width of a miss to really
stand out and say “Hah, hah, hah! You missed it!” But, you must
remind yourself that when someone looks at the quilt, they are seeing
the whole of the texture that the pebbling creates, and not that one
missed line.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">So, have I discovered the
secret to perfect pebbles? No, but I know I have to go at it very
slowly. Barely over the speed that I use to baste or do ruler work.
And, I have to remember to breathe! Oh, and if you have the choice, I
don't recommend pebbling large swathes of space. You will be at it
way too long! </span>

<span style="font-size: medium;">I've just got to show you
this quilt because it is so darn cute! It was made by a friend of
mine to donate to the local pet shelter as a raffle quilt.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Okay, so my customers are
dragging me, kicking and screaming, into the Modern Quilt world. What
is a Modern Quilt? A little google search tells me ---</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Modern quilts
embrace functionality, simplicity, </span>
</div>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">minimalism
and asymmetric designs. They usually </span>
</div>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">include bold
colors and expansive negative space.</span></div>
<div align="CENTER" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">And, they are
quilted in a new way, too. Straight or undulating lines, waves,
pebbles (oh, the damn pebble!) are used instead of Victorian feathers
or novelty motifs. No teddy bear or rose petal pantos here!</span></div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIf3UQPOunsFG655Nd7O9uZUskpDgFp7YC8YIwvE6EZjmvRjWJE1E4HkLCsgiZdNSNE0vqRy1olX3KA4HhPl9ONdoR43QTx1ILIjnWi1Y7ZEUElN1rcgwyvZCfCF8I7RTSRN1Xwn9bjj3H/s1600/da+jewel+001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIf3UQPOunsFG655Nd7O9uZUskpDgFp7YC8YIwvE6EZjmvRjWJE1E4HkLCsgiZdNSNE0vqRy1olX3KA4HhPl9ONdoR43QTx1ILIjnWi1Y7ZEUElN1rcgwyvZCfCF8I7RTSRN1Xwn9bjj3H/s1600/da+jewel+001.JPG" height="320" width="239" /></a></div>

<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div align="LEFT" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">This first
quilt utilizes a beautiful gradated red fabric to create a bargello
look. I had this one on the design wall for ages before I decided to
quilt it sideways with a wavy pattern, each line just touching the
line above. I used a light copper thread instead of going with red.
It works well on the light and the dark areas.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">Creating and maintaining perfect stitch
tension is crucial with solid fabrics, and I must give a shout out to
Fil-Tec, the makers of Glide thread. Once you create the right
tension, this thread will maintain it throughout the piece. Great
customer service, too!</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">A note about the designs...So it would not look too scrappy, I made sure I used each quadrant design at least twice. And, of course the line work on the backgrounds helped maintain continuity, too.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I haven't been able to
quilt for two weeks due to searing pain along the outer edge (little
finger to wrist) of my dominant hand. It came on slowly at first,
then escalated to intense pain. It has taken me awhile to figure out
why and how.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">When I quilt tiny little
designs (think pebbles) I work slowly, with clenched hands on the
handles, especially when backtracking is involved. And, half of each
pebble is backtracking! I know I'm not supposed to clench...but it is
such intense work and I never quite feel like I'm in control. So, I
hold on tighter.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I envy those quilters who
can work up a design like pebbles, quickly and easily. But, that's
not been my experience. One reason is that I do not have a stitch
regulator and therefore must quilt the backtracking at essentially
the same hand movement speed as the original line. I've worked ten
years without stitch regulation and I still think I'm pretty good at
it.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUYuc0Pbi-at3M7s9rY2aL8c5sKVCk1oUWlKTuIVqyDqsFQhdZxVfuQJTwA0oyo7_4ImkIyHU-kqBqxIrVyw5quzblN4Uo6KLkFlX-4GRFMx-Atlo0UcUp2mTIBCG1-8qVZXXHkKv-P9TU/s1600/Pebbles+002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUYuc0Pbi-at3M7s9rY2aL8c5sKVCk1oUWlKTuIVqyDqsFQhdZxVfuQJTwA0oyo7_4ImkIyHU-kqBqxIrVyw5quzblN4Uo6KLkFlX-4GRFMx-Atlo0UcUp2mTIBCG1-8qVZXXHkKv-P9TU/s1600/Pebbles+002.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">But, I didn't see this
coming! I think it is similar to a tennis elbow, or the kind of
injuries golfers get that is so like that. So, I had to lay off.
Luckily, I had finished all the Christmas quilts that my customers
needed by certain dates. Whew!</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Not what I had in mind, I
must say! I mean, if I wasn't going to be able to quilt, maybe I
could catch up on all those other projects......oh, wait.....pain.
Yeah, even holding a book open to read that first week was painful.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I won't go on about the
herbal and homeopathic remedies I tried, because the only thing my
hand needed was rest. But, at some point I've just got to get back to
my job (and, my passion)!</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">My husband (the
self-proclaimed “fixer”) came up with a great idea. If clenching
my hand created this problem, like I think it did, what if we changed
the size of the longarm handle? Make it bigger? So, I wrapped the
handle with a strip of cotton batting, and held it in place with a
piece of that stretchy ace bandage that sticks to itself. It is now
almost 50% larger than it was before.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidj28qCo1GW0Kvinq_sv0PhrRvqBevfunMNdb9iQyh5GLSH9ajYJIgWV4xLIzYMPXLlsHrtZPFO_eW0gQ8rHWJM2Cjx9E1hd-d-274UWAmqMrnLcAisnwhwGhuC6hNdU0SSZ6Sk5GqrcFN/s1600/Pebbles+003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidj28qCo1GW0Kvinq_sv0PhrRvqBevfunMNdb9iQyh5GLSH9ajYJIgWV4xLIzYMPXLlsHrtZPFO_eW0gQ8rHWJM2Cjx9E1hd-d-274UWAmqMrnLcAisnwhwGhuC6hNdU0SSZ6Sk5GqrcFN/s1600/Pebbles+003.JPG" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I've tried
it....tentatively. Mainly because, while my hand is much better,
there is still pain if I tighten my grip. The best part of the fix is
that it constantly reminds me NOT to clench. I don't feel like I have
the same control, but I will keep working with it until I do.
Because, I really don't want to spend another two weeks like the last
two!</span></div>

<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I wish I had more time to
do this sort of thing. Quilt things for presents, that is. I quilted one for
my Guild Gift Exchange, but I did not get pics of it. The fabric had way too much going on and I'm afraid the quilting lines got lost.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br />
</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">This table runner is for a
friend at Church. First, I found a sketch of a Celtic Cross on
Pinterest. (Do you Pinterest? I could spend a lifetime there!)</span></div>

</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">This first picture is
after quilting just the crosses. I struggled with the placement.
Originally I was going to place one cross in the center, but a friend
suggested two, one at each end.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">Then I got down to the
feathering. I did these all freehand, just chalking the spine
lightly. I echoed the feather, which gave me a line to hit with my
tight back-and-forth lines. Any time you are placing a dense fill
behind a feather, it helps if you echo the feather. The fill meets
the echo line and doesn't mess with the shape of the feather itself.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">I was thrilled when this
one arrived in my studio. Wonderful applique handwork. I knew it had
to be quilted just so. No story here, just lots of photos.</span></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">First, the full view of
the piece. It took a while to plan this, and then, it was redesigned
when the first idea did not work!</span></div>

<span style="font-size: medium;">Ten years ago I had the
opportunity to turn my mad passion into a profitable business. This

<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">John, for
believing in me and saying “Go for it!” Debbie, for selling me
her Gammill, the best machine in the world. Gina, thank you for your
client base so you could pursue your own dream. Monika and Kris for
being the most prolific quilt makers (numbers don't lie!). Willene
for your early support and encouragement. </span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: medium;">And, all of you, my
